The Butterfly Lady, by Jr. Danny M. Hoey

Gabriel Smith is a black man in a dress. Always in full makeup, he ridicules, inspires, and entertains; he is both mother and father, pageant and relief.

Tortured by his zealous father, Gabriel moves to Cleveland, Ohio, to start a new life. Soon, he learns that his presence, despite giving order to those closest to him, incites fear and hatred. As past and present collide, Gabriel becomes the mirror that reflects the lives of the people surrounding him, the spectacle that isn't as bad as the histories they want to escape completely.

Set against the backdrop of a city recovering from one of the worst race riots in history, The Butterfly Lady is filled with pain encased in the blues. This stunning first novel wrestles with the horrors of love and the consequences of being black, gay, and male.

Advance praise for The Butterfly Lady:

In The Butterfly Lady, Hoey, clearly driven by love for his characters and a passion to understand their lives, weaves a cocoon of community. Fearless, in the tradition of Morrison, he looks under beds and throws open closet doors to present truth – drawing the reader in to the place where lives crash.
- Anton Nimblett, author of Sections of an Orange

The Butterfly Lady riffs from the page in bursts and twists, conflagrating image, sound, language and character in a literary mimicry of jazz ... Danny Hoey's confident prose takes the reader into the heart of Cleveland's inner-city where its inhabitants face sometimes unanswerable questions of sexuality, identity, and race.
- Britta Coleman, author of Potter Springs, winner of the Lone Star Scribe Award

Danny M. Hoey, Jr.'s The Butterfly Lady presents haunting characters that ask - demand - a great deal: Understand and embrace the complications and nuances of African-American identity. Arm yourself with these revelations. This is a terrific novel; devastating and hopeful because Hoey so unflinchingly educates the reader. He writes with the fierceness and truth of James Baldwin and has given us a story that lingers and informs long after the last sentence.
- Dana Johnson, author of Elsewhere, California and Break Any Woman Down, winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award

Meaningful and moving.
By Allegra D
This book is simply a marvel. Its characters and images, conversations and settings are still gleaming in my memory, replaying and showing new meaning. That's just it: this book isn't just brilliantly written (it is, to be sure), it is meaningful. It is moving. It captured me in a way that I found surprising.
The characters are presented in the present, though the narrator gives us insightful slivers of their pasts, shows us what has hurt or bolstered them, shows us what gives them pause, and what keeps them moving forward despite whatever they are mired in.
There are some acts in this book--hateful, desperate, funny, sad, loving, wild--that only make sense because Hoey has presented them in just enough context. There are authors who fill the need to give us backstory on backstory, others who write characters whose actions are confusing or seem meaningless or out of place. Hoey has found the balance: enough to create a connection, to make us love each of them, understand all of them, not so much that it drags the story or seems indulgent.
Though the time period, or exact circumstances, may not correlate to my life, I feel it all. It is true for me and will be for you.
There are acts and words of villainy in this novel, but none of these characters is a villain. The villains are the hurt that they hold on to, and the rejection of the love around them (because it is easy, because they feel they don't deserve it, because their prejudices won't allow them to accept it and return it, because they are afraid of being rejected, or afraid of being consumed by it)... Sound familiar?
But this book isn't SAD or SERIOUS... it is just meaningful, moving. It is that rare book that we read because we enjoy, and then, upon finishing, has made us understand ourselves or those around us in some new way.
There are sad moments, of course, but overall the book is a celebration, and the characters are inspiring. Brave. Real.

Purchase this book, you won't be sorry! This book is very interesting and captures you from Chapter 1. I have not seen a main character such as Gabriel, in any literature to date. This is definitely an original piece that will force you to think and feel. I am so glad I have added this to my library.
