The Story of Crass, by George Berger

In-depth interviews with the main movers in the punk rock movement—Crass members Penny Rimbaud, Gee Vaucher, and Steve Ignorant—detail the face of the revolution founded by these radical thinkers and artists. When punk ruled the waves, Crass waived the rules by putting out their own records, films, and magazines and setting up a series of situationist pranks that were dutifully covered by the world’s press. Not just another iconoclastic band, Crass was a musical, social, and political phenomenon: commune dwellers that were rarely photographed and remained contemptuous of conventional pop stardom. As detailed in this history, their members explored and finally exhausted the possibilities of punk-led anarchy. This definitive biography of the band not only gives backstage access to their lives, philosophies, and the movement that followed, but also to never-before-seen photographs and rare dialogues.

Review
"Lucid in recounting their dealings with freaks, coppers, and punks the band's voices predominate, and that's for the best."  —Guardian

"[Crass] sowed the ground for the return of serious anarchism in the early eighties."  —Jon Savage, England's Dreaming

"For people a little fed up with the apolitical nature of most pop and indie rock, this book is an excellent guide for how to empower yourself . . . and yet is honest about feelings of persecution, impotence, and struggles to communicate with others of your own amorphous ideology when you take the pirate's path."  —Scribes Sounding Off: A Brief Unity of Time in Vortex

Interesting book
By Benjamin S
I really enjoyed this book. Lots of interesting information about the band itself, the individuals associated with the band and also the state of the world from that particular time. I've liked Crass for around thirty years now and their album 'Stations of the Crass' has held up well over the years. (My favourite Crass album). More importantly the message is as pertinent now as it ever was. I liked the way the people spoke of having to find their identity again after the band broke up. I could totally relate to that. When you're immersed in an alternative culture finding your place in the 'normal' world and relating to mainstream people is very difficult. Anyway! The book is highly recommend by me, I enjoyed it.

Fascinating band
By Todd Zimmer
If you grew up on punk music in the 80s, you had an opinion of Crass. You either loved them or hated them, but very few were indifferent. For me, the band had a mystique that transcended their music and I have to say, I was more interested in the look and content of their records than the politics of the band.
The packaging and design of all the releases really kept me buying, not just Crass, but all bands on the Crass record label. Crass used design very effectively.
And this is featured in the book prominently (graphic designers take note). Just about every question I would have for the band is answered in the book. The use of art, the relationship with the press, the private lives of the members examined. I had to nick a whole star off the review though because there is no index not enough pictures. This book is the best thing I have read on Crass though, George Berger, though, mentions that his preferred Anarchist Band was the Poison Girls. I do not agree, but would certainly read a book about them. Whad'ya say George?

Anyone with more than a cursory interest in punk rock will appreciate the information into the history of the band and underground radicalism of the crust / anarchy punk scene of late seventies, early eighties Great Britain.
