Leadership as a personal journey

I am always interested in new voices on issues of leadership. As a long time student of leadership herself, Schlichting intertwines her life experiences as a female chief executive (currently as CEO of Henry Ford Health System) with lessons from inventor and innovator Ford himself. Given the years she has spent working in Detroit during turbulent times, the juxtaposition is an intriguing one. Under Schlichting, HFHS won the coveted Baldridge Quality Award for performance excellence, with its national recognition for innovation, improvement, and visionary leadership. The seven-year journey her team undertook, from top executives to janitorial staff, is a model of patience, perseverance, and the use of continuous feedback that led HFHS to growth in efficiency, workforce satisfaction, and customer service.

Detroit Love

People always tell me how awful Detroit is. As far as I am concerned though, the Motor City has always been a place of great memories since my childhood. From the Detroit Lions, Meeting Mr. Barry Sanders, Mr. Herman Moore, The Jacksons (remember 1983?) Mosque#1, the auto show, Ford Field, Berverly Hills Cop I, all those places to eat, Mowtown holds a special place for me. No matter where you go there are reminders of the Ford Motor Industry in the form of old buildings, factories, and other structures.

While the focus of this work is to discuss leadership reform in America, I found the contents to bring back many wonderful memories of my trips to the Motor City.

I believe this work should be a point of reference for all those attempting to rebuild aspects of inner-city life in America. An equally important aspect of "Unconventional Leadership," is the emphasis on diversity in the workforce, which needs to be cited.in light of the year 2016. There are many incredible insights given by the author which are of value.

Looking forward to the day the Motor City becomes new again and when that happens Ms. Schlichting will be there.

To me, courage is often what defines a leader (in any realm of society) as either poor, good or great. And, this book containing Nancy Schlichting's unique perspectives as a female CEO in health care is full of stories exemplifying her GREAT leadership and her courage to lead in not only an unconventional way--but often while also defying stereotypes and overcoming prejudice. I highly recommend this book and Nancy's story to anyone currently in any type of business or organizational leadership.

Lucinda Scala Quinn is the founder of Mad Hungry, the headquarters for home cooks looking for proven recipes, strategies, and inspiration. She is the author of four cookbooks, most recently Mad Hungry: Feeding Men & Boys and Mad Hungry Cravings, and appears regularly on both morning television and QVC with her top-selling Mad Hungry kitchenware line. Lucinda is the former senior vice president and executive editorial director of food and entertaining at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and the host of her own television show, Mad Hungry: Bringing Back the Family Meal, and she cohosted Everyday Food on PBS for six years. Will Satisfy Your Every Craving

We've all been there. Craving a gooey, cheesy pizza on a Thursday night, until you finally give in and call the local pizza joint for delivery. Mad Hungry Cravings acknowledges that indulging your cravings is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. But going out to a restaurant or ordering take-out isn't the best way to do it.

Mad Hungry Cravings runs contrary to our conventional wisdom about fast food and take-out being fast and easy. Lucinda Scala Quinn asserts that you can make your favorite comfort foods at home, and they will be healthier, tastier, faster, and cheaper than getting the restaurant version. After a few minutes of perusing this cookbook, she'll have you convinced.

This cookbook begins with a section on Scala Quinn's basic philosophy about crave-able foods. Keeping fresh ingredients on hand is half the battle. Start simply. Plan ahead and strategize. Broaden your horizons. These simple gems of advice are oh-so-obvious, yet so challenging to put into action. The author makes you feel like this is really possible, and that basic changes in the way your household operates can facilitate healthier, cheaper eating. She also explains the essential ingredients that make it possible to whip up Latin, American, Mediterranean, and Asian dishes without making special trips to the store. The rest of the cookbook is broken into the following categories:

One of my favorite things about this cookbook is its excellent layout. The design is fun, fresh, and modern, making the cookbook easy to read and very accessible. Recipes are laid out in a very natural fashion, with ingredients on the left and cooking instructions in a column to the right. Special notes, tips, and tricks appear at the bottom. This layout feels very organic and useable, making it simple to follow a recipe without getting lost in excessive text.

As for the recipes themselves, I tried four different dishes before writing the review. Each was spot-on. The Apple-Maple French Toast is a spectacular treat, sweet but not too sweet. It's perfect for a weekend brunch or special breakfast. The Spinach Phyllo Pie has fantastic flavor and amazing texture; the perfect blend of phyllo crust crunch and creamy spinach filling. The Fake-Out Flautas are as delicious as your local Mexican joint, but with a fraction of the fat. And the New York Cheesecake was absolutely creamy and divine. I'm looking forward to trying other recipes in the weeks to come (Shrimp Pad Thai is next).

Buyers should be aware that this cookbook emphasizes healthier versions of commonly craved foods, but that each recipe is not necessarily healthy. Recipes feature butter, full-fat milk, sugar, cheese, and other ingredients that may not be diet-friendly for some (however, it would be fairly straightforward to make basic substitutions to suit your dietary needs). Although the cookbook fulfills its stated purpose -- making homemade, cleaner versions of commonly craved foods -- those seeking a truly low-fat, low-calorie, low-sodium recipes may be disappointed. Personally, I use butter and full-fat ingredients in moderation, but this may not be an approach that works for everyone.

A note for vegetarians: many of the recipes in Mad Hungry Cravings include meat-centric dishes. It's hard to make a veggie-friendly Philly Cheesesteak or New York City Hotdog. However, many of the salads, appetizers, soups, and desserts are meatless, so this cookbook may still be worth the purchase.

Overall, I highly recommend Mad Hungry Cravings. The breadth and scope of recipes is excellent, and the dishes I have tried thus far have been flavorful, satisfying my cravings. I'll be returning to this cookbook many times in the upcoming years, when the hankering for take-out strikes. Enjoy!

Feels like much more than 173 recipes!

I was surprised to see on the cover of Mad Hungry Cravings that it has 173 recipes. It feels like so much more than that! There is a little bit of everything in this book! The book can be summed up in the Mad Hungry Maxims - how and why to cook the food you crave at home - focus on cooking at home instead of take-out.

The book begins with a look at the pantry, or as she calls it the larder. A lot of books begin like this, but this one is set up a bit differently. Your larder is divided into American, Asian, Mediterranean, and Latin. Under each category are the basic ingredients that you need to keep stocked.

The books starts with the breakfast section where I marked the following to try:

Double Pork Sausage (this is ingenious and I am ashamed that I hadn't thought of it before)
Asparagus and Spinach Frittata
Hash Brown Egg Topper
Milk and Cookies Smoothie
Date Walnut Muffins

I have all of her cookbooks and have tried numerous recipes on her blog. You can never go wrong. Everything is delicious. What I really love about her stye of cooking it's from scratch and proof that we can feed our families in a

I have all of her cookbooks and have made many of her recipes on her blog and show as well. Nothing has ever failed or been a disappointment. What I really love about her style is she proves you can cook healthy meals from scratch even if you are a busy women in a chaotic house, or a college kid, bachelor or single person. Your family can eat meals that don't come from boxes or cans. You wont be disappointed. It's even an excellent book for teens and college kids to get into. She has recipes for foods we like to get from take out and shows you how to make it using the same amount of time it would take to go out and get it, being much healthier for our bodies and pocketbook. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

I love the series

I love the series. So much so that I'm rereading it. What I like about the newer issues is the continuity in the storyline and the characters. They are the same people as in the first issues, especially Ryan and Jamie. They are maturing, yes, but it is a natural growth. I like that.

About time...!

A decade after his death, somebody finally got around to compiling a tribute to the late, great Karl Edward Wagner and his greatest creation, the arch-hero, Kane, in a two-volume set: Gods in Darkness, the Complete Novels of Kane, and this volume, The Midnight Sun, which contains all of the short stories, poems, etc., that have been floating around, mostly out of print, for the last decade or so.

Kane was my first experience with Wagner. Back in the '70's, when I was still a wee lad and most of my friends were reading stuff like The Outsiders, I stumbled on a paperback copy of Death Angel's Shadow, the one with the Frazetta cover, and spent the next few nights hiding in bed; under my covers, flashlight on long after midnight, altering my mind with this combination of Robert E. Howard and Lovecraft.

Now, after reading most of his published work, for my buck, the noveletta's contained here are absolutely Wagner's best writing, period. The shorter Kane stories are nightmarishly bizarre, violent, and punchy, unlike Wagner's complete novels which tend to be a bit bloated and have a tendency to lose momentum (although they're still worth reading, by all means). The novel Bloodstone (contained in 'God's') is particularly inconsistent. That seems natural, since Wagner tended to work in the short story format, both in his own work and as the editor of other authors' works, in his many horror anthologies.

As far as the compilations go, they're okay. There are lots of typo's in the text (nitpicky, I know, but c'mon...), and frankly, my biggest gripe - the Ken Kelly covers just stink. Nobody does Wagner and Kane (or fantasy illustration in general) justice like Frank Frazetta.

Anyway. Say what you will about the likes of Lin Carter, L. Sprague de Camp, Manly Wade Wellman, Fritz Leiber, et al, there are really only two masters of what's come to be known as 'dark fantasy': Robert E. Howard, and Wagner.

This volume is great. Pick it up and enjoy.

Kane- the Ultimate Rogue

Karl Edward Wagner's Kane is one of the most unique characters in fiction. Based on the Biblical Cain, Kane is an immortal who wanders his world (a version of Earth) hatching plots and trying to stave off boredom. Wagner decribes him as six feet tall, 300 pounds of muscle with red hair and beard. His most remarkable feature are his eyes, which are a piercing blue and contain a insane killer's gleam- the mark of Kane. Immensely strong and lightning quick, Kane is master of all weapons and combat types. Kane is also a sorcerer of great power. Wagner's creation is utterly amoral, at times a leader of ravaging armies or bandit bands. Sometimes he is hunted by those trying to seek righteous vengence or rid the world of his evil. The stories span thousands of years and the last ones take place in contemporary San Francisco and London. Dispite the monumental evil which Kane has perpetrated in his millennia long existance, the reader can't help but root for him. That's good writing!

A must have for all fans of Kane.

This book is a fitting companion to Night Shade Books previous release "Gods in Darkness". The text is crisp and clean and I have only noticed one typographical error. This book brings together for the first time all of Karl Edward Wagner's short stories and poems about his mystic swordsman anti-hero Kane. The stories are presented in chronological order which is a nice change. Readers who own "Night Winds" will note that "Sing A Last Song of Valdese" now preceeds "Lynortis Reprise" and "Raven's Eyrie". My only complaint, and it is minor, is that Night Shade didn't include an overall chronology of the Kane stories in both of it's editions. I first read Wagner's Kane stories when I was 13 years old. Twenty-two years later they still hold their appeal and I'm saddened that there will be no more tales of Kane. Hint, hint, perhaps there is an author out there willing to pick up where Wagner left off. My favourite tale in this entire collection is "Reflections for the Winter of my Soul". This is one of the best werewolf stories I have ever read and I think it would make a great adaptation to the screen or a show like "The Outerlimits" or "Tales From the Darkside".

Captures the spirit of the movie perfectly!

Okay, I know I've ranted about novelizations before and how they are totally artless and only enjoyable on a purely pulp level. But The Goonies is the exception to that rule and actually proves to be rather brilliant. Yes, it's totally not George Orwell's Animal Farm or Huxley's Brave New World so a five-star review in comparison to them would seem kind of ludicrous, but on it's own level, The Goonies is the perfect adventure book.

The main thing that makes this book so much better than typical film novelizations is that it's told from the point of view of Mikey Walsh (Sean Astin's character), so we really get inside his head and his early-teenage perspective on things. Second is the fact that writer James Kahn (no, not that one) wastes no time in getting things going and makes every sentence and every paragraph relevant or interesting.

He also nails every character to a tee. Chris Columbus' crazy assortment of Goonies and their eccentric personalities is one of the many things that make the film so great and Kahn gives them all enough space to fully develop among chase scenes, octopus attacks and booby traps. But the best character of the lot has to be Sloth. He's such a cool guy!

Taken from Chris Columbus' complete script, there are a few scenes in here that were cut from the final film (I don't know if they are included in the DVD extras) but I particularly like the extra scenes were Sloth shows off what a misunderstood genius he is and how good he is at impersonating and acting. He and Chunk are the REAL heros of the film.

The last, but certainly not least, advantage this book has is the deeper insight into the metaphysical connection between Mikey and One-Eyed Willie. It was present, to some effect, at the end of the movie but I always thought it could be taken further and Kahn manages to create an inspiring character out of a dead guy.

If you are a Goony, then you must get this book. It's such a shame that it's out of print because I think a new edition, marketed as a teen-adventure novel would be very popular.

Goonies are forever. Goonies never say die!

Long ago, when I was really hooked on the Goonies, I read this book with great zeal. It really does capture the essence of the movie, and I would have to agree with the other reviewers that it may in fact be better than the movie.

The Goonies is a very well written adaptation of one of the best adventure movies I have seen. It is written from the point of view of Mikey, one of the kids in the story, and protrays the story in character and with good descriptive words and phrases. you can feel that this is happening to a thirteen year kid and his friends. Adventure and action and pirates, and buried treasure! ::grin:: Makes me want to go out and sail the seven seas. Al
