Mostly great, but a little bit of a mixed bag

On the upside, this book is a great introduction to the ways in which a new copywriter must change her ideas about what makes for "effective writing." As someone who has written for everything from Premiere magazine to continuing medical education pamphlets for radiologists, I consider myself a very versatile writer. However, it's no good being versatile if you don't even know what style is requested from a copywriter. This book presents (and repeats) very important points that I feel are turning me in the right direction -- for example, the idea that you are writing for your reader. A simple concept but the writer explains very well how important it is. I feel that after I finish this book I will have a lot of good insight on many general ways to think about copywriting, and to improve my drafts.

On the downside, there are some weird and distracting themes throughout this book. One of them is the attractiveness of women. The author finds it far more entertaining to write about (or hint about) his sexual conquests/interest than I do to read them, at least in a book like this. In addition to this, the writer reinforces hoary, outdated gender stereotypes. (Women like shoes and men like gadgets!) Yes, stereotypes are there for a reason, but gender politics have advanced much further than, apparently, the writer. This is also shown in the recommended idea to keep "a mental image" of your reader. It's not enough to come to a detailed and specific example of your reader, but now you must apply a visual stereotype to that person. I find this unhelpful advice in writing or in life.

Finally, though I fully respect and appreciate the author's desire to keep the terminology simple, there's no need to ditch conventional grammar altogether. The section on "nounitis" was fairly painful to read, as a simple description of active vs. passive voice would be much more useful than inventing a word that doesn't even really explain the problem. Consider that notes on your writing are far more likely to include the term "passive voice" than "nounitis."

In the end, if you are looking for a quick, easy read to get you ready to think like a copywriter, I highly recommend this book. If I were not planning to read any others (which I am), I would feel pretty well prepared to start writing copy.

This little book says it all.

I have read a lot of books on copy writing for sales and marketing. This one takes all the good advice in all the other books, and condenses it into a small, easy to read book. It not only explains good writing, it IS good writing, an example in and of itself. If you are going to buy one book to help you write your own ad, brochure, or website copy, make this the one.
