About the Author
David McKee grew up in Devon, England. Later, while a student at Plymouth Art College, he began selling his cartoon drawings to newspapers. Since 1964 he has published a number of successful books for children, including the King Rollo stories, which he helped animate for British television. His first book for Lothrop was Snow Woman, of which Publishers Weekly said, "It is McKee's superb humor--conveyed almost solely in the illustrations...that wins the day." Of his second Lothrop book, Who's a Clever Baby, Publishers Weekly had this to say: "Grandma's alliterative frenzies are fascinating and readers will find Baby's manipulative stubbornness vastly amusing."

Mr. McKee enjoys traveling and doing books that "leave things unsaid."

This is an utterly charming and fun story about Old's disastrous birthday celebration ...
By Deb
Elmer, the patchwork elephant, was strolling in the jungle with his cousin, Wilbur. Lion, Tiger, Monkey, and the two cousins could hear something thundering in the distance. It was so loud that Monkey stuck his fingers in his ears. What could it possibly be? Wide-eyed Lion claimed, "Sounds like your chaps are having fun, Elmer." Could be, but the only way to find out was to go have a peek at the situation. Oh, yes ... there was a herd of pink elephants having a BIG celebration. It was Old's one-hundredth birthday and they were doing it up in grand style.

Their pink trunks were going this way and that as they celebrated. Little Rose, a friend of Elmer's, was joining in on the fun. The elephants moved to "their special clearing near a cliff top" and Rose gave Old a little rose. It was their special "signal" to begin shouting and stomping. "Happy birthday, ONE. Happy birthday, TWO." With each declaration the pink elephants would STOMP! All of a sudden something dreadful happened. The ground began to quake, the rocks flew this way and that and Old was all by his lonesome on a "pillar of rock." Ooooh, the pink elephant's eyes grew wide at the sight. What could they do to save poor Old? Would this hundredth birthday celebration be his last?

This is an utterly charming and fun story about Old's disastrous birthday celebration. Elmer takes a bit of a backseat in this tale as his friend, Rose, and a herd of pink elephants do their thing. Of course the overly-exuberant crowd goes a bit too far when they stomp, stomp, stomp. The artwork is hilariously daffy when they find they are in a horrible dilemma. My favorite scene, of course, is when the big quake shakes everything up and the wide-eyed pink elephants become frightened. Of course there is a little twist when Super El shows up to do his thing. If you have a youngster who loves Elmer, he or she will definitely have a soft spot for a BIG herd of pink elephants!

There are much better Elmer books
By Ellie
My two-year-old son absolutely adores Elmer, the patchwork elephant and when we had to travel recently, I got him a bunch of the books in Kindle format to distract him on the plane ride. Unfortunately, Elmer and the Birthday Quake was a bit of a disappointment, particularly compared to some of the other Elmer books. Although the story one of the more complicated Elmer stories (there is a separate subseries for younger readers that focuses on basic themes like colors, counting, weather, etc.) and this story lacks the lessons built into many of the other stories. Without that underlying theme, the story is definitely lacking.

There is a group of elephants celebrating the 100th birthday of Old. Part of their celebration involves actions that result in old being stranded. Out of nowhere Super El swoops in and saves the day. Then there are general rides on Super El. Even our son wasn't a fan of this one when compared to others in the series such as Elmer and the Hippos, Elmer and the Monster, Elmer and the Big Bird and Elmer and Rose. Pass on this one and get one of the better Elmer books.

Seize the day
By C. Jordan
Another great short story for bedtime for a small child. These darling stories for children are always full of adventure with a final thought that is just right for the youngest children. We love them.
