Excellent chronicles from an Arab man's POV

If you are interested in an Arab man's account of the actions of Napoleon's army in Egypt especially in cultural and political domains, then this book is the right one for you. I bought this book for my college final paper, but it was actually fun to read as well. I think this book is very relevant today too, with all the discussions regarding the West vs. the Arab East...

Towards the end of the book, I got a sense that Al-jabarti did not completely despise the French after all, surprisingly...As I read this book, I felt as if I were back in time with all of them.

The book is short and sweet, and a good read, even for non-history majors. Also, what is funny is that I purchased this book through one of Amazon's sellers, but they LOST it in shipping, so I got a refund and managed to get a copy elsewhere...People should be wary of the independent booksellers on Amazon, because they don't seem that responsible when it comes to international shipping.

A fateful meeting of East and West

The Chronicle of Al-Jabarti is an account of the first six months of Napoleon' s invasion and occupation of Egypt 1798. Sheikh 'Abd Al-Rahman Al-Jabarti was an astronomer at Al-Azhar. As a member of the 'Ulama, Napoleon appointed him to the Diwan, or Grand Council, through which the French had hoped to govern Egypt. This allowed Al-Jabarti to compile a detailed chronicle of the French organization of administrative matters, the battles and the flight of the Mamluks to Upper Egypt and the Revolt of Cairo. Al-Jabarti left a valuable record of his impressions of the French in terms of their character and learning. With the possible exception of the very protracted Spanish Reconquista which ended with the fall of Granada in 1492, it had not been since the Crusades that a 'Western' power had attempted an invasion of a Muslim land on the scale and scope of Napoleon. The French General had also brought to Egypt an army of scholars from L' Academie whose purpose it was to study and record all possible aspects of interest, while also showing off European science and learning. Louis Antoine Fauvelet de Bourrienne (Napoleon's private secretary) included in his Memoirs a brief account of the invasion of Egypt . A reading of both The Chronicle and the Memoirs provides an interesting insight as to how the Arabs and the French saw each other.

We have a lot of histories of Napoleon in Egypt. Even more of the naval battle where Nelson came in. Here is a view of the invasion of Egypt left from the Egyptian side. His comments are rather surprising. It was very clear that the French military machine was vastly superior to the military forces then in Egypt. The French knowledge, science, technology was likewise admired by Al-Jabarti. On the other hand their claim to be the defender of the faith is obviously ridiculous, even though they did have a translation of the Koran.

This particular edition of the book has been expanded in honor of Al-Jabarti's 250th birthday. The translation is by Shmuel Moreh of the Hebrew University, and Robert L. Tignor provides an introduction giving an overview of the events.

Ultimate Star Wars

One of the authors, Ryder Windham, has worked on many great Star Wars books previously and does a great job compiling detailed information about the movies and their components. In his introduction, he begins with an interesting point: think of Ewoks, or Lobot, or the Slave I. These are never mentioned by name in the films, yet most casual fans are aware of them and know their names. That means they somehow absorbed that information from another source - perhaps the internet, a video game, a novel, an animated series, or maybe even an encyclopedia like this.

The book is organized by topics - the first half of the book is Characters and Creatures, and then the second half of the book covers things like Locations, Technology, and Vehicles. Appearing at various points throughout the encyclopedia are "Key Events" (the Duel on Mustafar, Training on Dagobah, etc.)

The book is full of detail... each major character gets a biography, important events which they were involved, and sometimes other tidbits of info such as their wardrobe, their weapons, etc. Important characters like Princess Leia and Obi-Wan Kenobi get a full 2-page spread, while smaller characters like Poggle the Lesser or Jek Porkins only get a fraction of a page. But its the inclusion of these small characters and creatures (who may only be on screen for a few seconds) that make the encyclopedia useful and comprehensive.

Each section also includes a "timeline" and a "behind the scenes". So for example, the section on vehicles will have a Vehicle Timeline that covers the major events in the saga involving ships and transports - the Boonta Eve podrace, the Battle of Yavin (which destroyed the Death Star), etc. Then there will be a behind the scenes page that shows an AT-AT miniature, an early TIE fighter and X-Wing concept sketch, etc.

For those wondering what canon is used for the encyclopedia, it seems to be the six Star Wars films as well as the Clone Wars and Rebels TV series. In looking through the book, I could not find any included subjects that were strictly EU and did not appear in the films/animated series.

I should also mention that the book includes a nice foreword by Anthony Daniels, who briefly discusses the complexity of the saga and admits that despite his involvement in the saga over 30 years even he doesn't know all the facts.

Overall, this is a highly-recommended product. The casual Star Wars fan will likely learn a lot; and even the most die-hard fans should learn something obscure that they did not know before.

Highly recommended book for established or newbie fans

This book would be a great gift for either a new or established SW fan. I have almost all of DK Publishing's Star Wars books and this one does not disappoint. The layout and design are innovative and interesting. Facts and photos on every page bring the SW Saga to life. As a long-time fan, there wasn't a ton of "brand new" information here for me, but there were enough "wow, I didn't realize that" moments to make me feel like I was learning new things about the Saga. I think this book might be geared for introducing new fans or getting casual fans up-to-speed in advance of The Force Awakens in December 2015. In that, this book succeeds admirably. Get it!

I purchased this for my 10 yr old nephew who is obsessed with Star Wars, who isn't? The book is clearly written for everyone who enjoyed the classic movies. The book is just what it says it is, full of color pictures and information on all of the characters. I ordered the book used, but it looks new. I'm so glad I found this book in time for the new Star Wars movie debut and before Christmas. He's going to love it!
