Disappointing

When I originally bought this I was hoping for something more refreshing than the book by Lewis on the Assassins however on reading the preface and finding out that one of the first things the author does is pay homage to Lewis (Is this some kind of prerequisite to getting your book published these days?) I didnt hold out much hope.

If you have the Lewis book on the assassins then you almost certainly dont need to buy this one. A number of things let me down with this book not least on checking the bibliography at the back and finding largely the standard Western translations of a few of ibn Athirs books, Juwaynis and ibn Munqidh.

The book covers the well trodden ground in the history of the Assassins, largely from an entirely western perspective. The first encounters from a Western crusader to the early history of the Ismailis in Egypt and the split causing the Nizari sect. The establishment of their castles in Persia and Syria and the various assassinations that took place leading up to their eventual fall and spread into India.

Unfortunately this book offers nothing new. There is no study of the Ismaili philosophy, nothing on what happened to the religious beliefs of the Nizaris or the Ismailis beyond the Mongol invasion. Nothing on the all too obvious links with the Kizilbashi in North East Iran and East Turkey or the Alevi groups in Syria and Turkey or even their possible influence on Sufism through the Bektashi order. In short nothing.

If you really want to read something of substance about this group you may want to try the institute of Ismaili studies. This and the book of Bernard Lewis is nothing more than coffee table sensationalism.

Enjoyable and entertaining on many levels

This book was extremely clever. There were many parts I enjoyed reading aloud with my husband, it was so good. The author made a creative use of the old traditional hard-bitten detective genre, but with tons of irony thrown in. I think it would make a good movie, but Hollywood would probably ruin it by not using the book's witty dialog for the script, but dumbing it down. Also they might be afraid of getting flack from some people who think there are elements in it that don't treat Judaism (e.g., the man who sets up the boundaries around the town, and the rabbis) with sufficiently sober reverence.
The basic idea of how this Jewish entity in Alaska came about was introduced slowly bit by bit. I recommend reading the appendices first, where the author describes how he came to write it.
The use of language is very creative. The plot becomes more and more intricate but remains intriguing. Not to spoil the plot, it does help if you know a little about the whole notion of a Jewish Messiah.
I liked it so much I am re-reading it now that I know how it all develops.
There are some extremely memorable characters. All in all, I found it a thoroughly enjoyable book, even though I usually dislike detective or mystery novels. I am looking forward to reading more of his books.

This is an amazing book. It draws you in with its fantastic alternate-history premise: what if the Jews had never found a homeland in Israel, and instead had been allowed to find refuge from the Holocaust in Sitka, Alaska, where the lingua franca is Yiddish instead of Hebrew and the culture is decidedly "Old World?"

The book centers around Meyer Landsman, a jaded police detective investigating a mysterious murder. The plot is interesting and satisfying, but what ultimately made me love this book were its unabashed Jewishness that showed up in the very language- the metaphors, the descriptions- and Chabon's unexpectedly poignant commentary on the isolation and exile that comes with being a Jew.

The Last Days

This is the third Chabon book that I have read (after THE FINAL SOLUTION and THE MYSTERIES OF PITTSBURGH) and it is unquestionably the best -- imaginative, audacious, thought-provoking, and humane. As I gather he did with KAVALIER & CLAY, Chabon takes a genre of popular fiction, in this case the police story, and transforms it into a vehicle capable of carrying significant insights into the human condition, and particularly the complex crosscurrents of Jewish identity. For some reason this fascinates me, and I have read a good deal of post-Holocaust fiction, but I felt that I understood more about Jewish life in America, especially among the orthodox, from reading this book than from any other author since Chaim Potok (e.g. THE CHOSEN or MY NAME IS ASHER LEV).

Chabon creates an alternative historical reality on the basis of three plausible assumptions. The first is that, in the years before the War, America created a home for a limited number of Jewish refugees in Sitka, on the South-East coast of Alaska; (this plan was actually floated, but never brought to a vote). Second, that the new state of Israel was overrun by its enemies shortly after its founding, causing a massive exodus of people to be accommodated in this small area, giving rise to a large city built up over islands and a narrow strip of land. The third assumption is that these refugees were not accepted as American immigrants, but as temporary nationals of the new entity, leased for a period of sixty years. So while Jewish Sitka is a self-governing city-state, with Yiddish its official language, and with its own police force, this authority is precarious. For one thing, different sects have taken over different parts of the city, effectively maintaining their own law, even sometimes in opposition to the official law. For another, the sixty-year lease is about to expire, and the action of the book takes place in the last weeks before Reversion, when Jews who have not made other arrangements will be forced out again in yet another Exodus.

One such unprepared unfortunate is our protagonist, an alcoholic homicide detective named Meyer Landsman. One of the other residents in the fleabag hotel where he lives is found murdered, with a chess game set out on a board beside him. Even though his superiors tell him to drop the case, Landsman persists in his attempts to discover who the victim really was, and who killed him. This thread sews the plot together and leads to some surprising places. Ultimately, however, it is not the whodunnit element that is important; we discover the answer, but that is a minor detail in the almost apocalyptic drama of fear and destiny that is revealed in the shadow of the last days of the Jewish people in Sitka. But while specifically Jewish in context, I find the book also is full of insight into the fundamentalist mindset generally, and it is very much a reflection of forces in American politics of our own time.

Chabon is equally successful on the intimate level. We come to know a lot about Myer Landsman: the suicide of his chess grandmaster father, the death of his sister in a flying accident, and his separation from his wife Bina after the abortion of their unborn child. This last relationship is further complicated when Bina turns up as Meyer's new boss, but the unraveling of the case also has the effect of bringing the past and present together, in ways that are ultimately deeply satisfying, and give the book human warmth as a ballast to its flights of brilliance. If you come to the novel as a Gentile (and perhaps even as a Jew), you will be plunged into a world that seems hermetic, claustrophic, extremely strange. When you finish it, you will understand where the strangeness comes from. More, you will be left with a small group of human beings whom you have come to know as intimately as if they were your own family or neighbors.

The Mystery of Fire

This is a great book! Don't be mislead by the diminutive size of this volume, only fifty-four pages. The book is packed with more than enough ideas to ponder in just one sitting. The title is somewhat misleading, only a small portion of the book deals with Melchizedek. The mystery of fire and its meaning to mankind is the actual theme of the book. The author attempts to provide his readers a method to discover the origins of man, who he is, and his true place in the universe. Hall describes how man's body is a living temple, and man a high priest serving at the initiation and rituals occuring in the vaious chambers and passageways of the human body. Lurking just beneath the surface of the world's greatest classical literature from ancient times is the collective esoteric knowledge of the human race. It isn't free. It must be worked for. Read and re-read and ponder to discover the essence of the writer's thoughts burried beneath symbolism and allegory. The possession of the occult keys to human salvation through knowledge of self is the goal for which the wise men of all ages have labored. It was the hope of possession of these ancient formulae that strengthened the candidates who struggled valiantly through the danger and disappointments of the ancient initiations. Sometimes, actually, giving their lives in their quest for the truth. It is unlawful to reveal to the uninitiated the key links to the chain of mysteries. It is possible, however, without breech of confidence, to explain certain of the lesser secrets which will vindicate the intergrity of the older hierophants, but also reveal part of the mystery of man's divine nature. This book should be appreciated by Freemasons!

Manly P. Hall a respectable man!

Don't pay attention to the "rubbish" review. Buy this book! People like this should not be reading any of the Mystical books! To a person who is NOT READY all is rubbish. This is why the first Tarot key is called "The Fool". Because to a "normal" person anyone with knowledge of the Mysteries is a Fool! This is why we have the gargoyles, sphinx, and "monsters" outside mystery schools! To frighten the weak of mind away! I have been a Rosicrucian (BOTA, AMORC) for 28 years and a Mason for one. I am also a Computer Scientist. I can tell you that Hall's other book "The Secret Teachings of all Ages" is the ONE most popular book with all students of the Path. Yes, all Mystery Schools (Hermetic, Alchemy, etc.) and the Freemasons work on the transformation of Man. They are the "Builders of the Adytum" (Temple (body)). This should not be too hard to understand to a "normal" person after all we have the example of the Buddha, Jesus, etc. They transformed themselves (Cosmic Consciousness, Christ Consciousness) to "Sons of God". After all, we are ALL "Sons of God" because there is nothing in this Universe (and HE that forms it) OUTSIDE of HIM! Think about it...

The Divine Trinity

The Occult Anatomy of Man, Melchizedek and the Mystery of Fire and Spiritual Centers in Man are three books that I highly recommend for any serious student of the occult. I have Spritual Centers in Man under its original title, An Essay on the Fundamental Principles of Operative Occultism....it is pretty much the same book. It talks about the various spiritual centers but what I like about it most is the beginning subject matter which is the requirements of the occult student and what he or her should expect on the path of Occult Studies. The Occult Anatomy of Man explains how man is a microcosm of the universe and Melchizedek relates Biblical symbology to the various parts of the physical and spiritual bodies. Kundalini, chakras and the various bodies of man are covered in all three books. I recommend them all.

Just barely above medicore

I'm giving this a three-star rating because I'm an idealist. It's a pretty solid book compared to its competition, but its competition is not exactly stiff.

The problem with this book is it is far too verbose, and a bit disorganized. The book author spends an inordinate amount of time explaining histories of things which might've been better set as condensed sidebars, or perhaps appendices. The code examples can be extremely lengthy for simple concepts. There are also sections which transition from very basic to very advanced with seemingly no warning

For example, in the chapter on sessions (5) has this flow: "What is a session/why do I need them?" -> "What are the different ways a session can be implemented at the HTTP level?" (of dubious use to the average user) -> "How do I use sessions in Java Servlets?" (the portion of genuine interest) -> "Some advanced session features in Java" (good info, if not quite necessary so early on) -> "Clustering an Application That Uses Sessions" (good info, but extremely specific and of dubious use to the average user)

In my opinion, this chapter's focus should've been almost exclusively on "How do I use sessions in Java Servlets?" It's not a sin to include extra information, but the main feature shouldn't be sandwiched between reams of overly specific and advanced, or otherwise uninteresting information.

To illustrate further, the "What is a session/why do I need them?" part is two full, meaty pages, containing zero pictures. This is to justify sessions in general: a technology that is clearly necessary, widely used, and available in all major frameworks across all major languages. Three large paragraphs are attached to the subheading "Maintaining State," a requirement which shouldn't be that hard to comprehend to most programmers (and this book already assumes you're comfortable with JavaSE and Maven). Then there are two following subheadings: "Remembering Users" and "Enabling Application Workflow," both of which, from the headline alone, are simply direct applications of maintaining state.

In total the chapter on sessions is just under 70 pages long. These are large pages in a modest font. This could've been trimmed down to 10 pages or less, especially by eliminating unnecessary information or deferring it to more advanced chapters, but also by revising the slightly overblown prose.

In the end, I am learning what I wanted to learn when I purchased it, but I can't shake the feeling that I'd learn far faster and more effectively if the author had been more concise, eloquent, and planned in his execution. It is certainly a far cry from skillfully written books such as 'The C Programming Language.'

That said, if you *need* to start learning Java web programming *today* and are tired of looking through book reviews, this book will get the job done. All the information presented here is generally good and accurate.

Just be warned that you might feel a bit aggravated that the author's wasting your time while you plow through some of the more obviously excessive passages in the book.

Excellent overview of web app development using Java EE 7 and Spring 4

Not many programming books are published that not only use the latest versions of the software and programming language at the time of writing, but also go a step further and preview some up and coming technologies that will almost certainly be generally available by the time you read the book (e.g., Java 1.8 was released around the same time this book was published).

This book is a great intro to the myriad Java enterprise frameworks available today. Learn how Java EE 7 has made Java EE relevant for the first time since Servlets were introduced. Not only are the main Java EE topics covered nicely, but there are a few chapters involving the ubiquitous Spring Framework that aid the programmer in implementing features that aren't very well covered yet by Java EE (like authentication that doesn't rely on the underlying operating system).

If you're an enterprise software developer who primarily works on web-facing applications (which includes web services, not just websites), then this book is a great reference for the countless frameworks and acronyms that enterprise Java programming has to offer.

I'm about 2/3 through this book and am working the code examples in each chapter. I've worked through numerous programming books over the last 5 years, and this is certainly in my top 5. I appreciate the approach that the author takes in presenting the material, it is written clearly, and the code examples work and are relevant. I also appreciate that the book is using the latest versions of the technology covered such as Java 1.8 and Spring 4.0 (looking at you Manning coming out with a Spring 3.2 book next month, maybe). I appreciate the emphasis on using a debugger while writing your code and also doing some checking under the hood to see what's going on, such as looking at the generated servlet code the container produces from your JSPs.

For those reading the reviews about only having the source code for IntelliJ: I'm working through the book using
Netbeans and am creating the examples from scratch with no problem. I even structure some of the paths differently than the book's code (yes I play around with the code to see what works and how to break it). My customer-support app (the main app continued throughout the book) works just fine. If you're going through the book and just downloading the source code from Wrox instead of working with the code and using a debugger, you're not getting a good benefit from the book. This book is not for beginners; if you don't know an HTTP GET from a POST or the difference between static and instance methods in Java, this book isn't for you.
