Each one-to-two page article is drizzled with small, clipped color photos and paintings supplemented by boxed capsule biographies, brief side excursions, and see-also references. If you have an inquisitive child and you are a little rusty on science facts and figures, this is the book for BOTH of you!! Fun and interesting to read. A great reference book as well. A little on the pricey side, but packs a lot of information in one place. Great illustrations. Nice layout.

Great Intoduction to Science for Children

This is a book well suited to give a overview of a wide range of scientific topics. It may not be the end all as a scientific reference, but will spark your child's interest and imagination about science. After reading this book, your child will want to go on to more detailed books about their specific areas of interest.

The book is organized into chapters of broad topics such as Matter, Reactions, Materials, Electricity, Sound and Light, Weather, Space, Living things, etc. The breadth of subjects is a welcome change. The school curriculum of elementary children tends to be patchy, and this book fills in many gaps that they may not even touch on in Science Class.

Each page is filled with colorful and attention grabbing illustrations. There is a short synopsis of the subtopic and then the page is filled with factoids which match the attention span of children this age.

My son enjoyed this book immensely and it was his favorite for two years. It was a great nightime "story" book.

Great technique but could be better organized

Breathwalk is a simple and powerful idea but this book makes it needlessly complicated which is why I can only give it four stars. However, the book IS well researched and well written, and so I do recommend it as long as you know in advance that you'll have to do some work to dig all the bits of information from many different chapters.
With this type of book the reader will often want to get started quickly and can usually expect to find one chapter that helps them do that by presenting the basics. That's what this book lacks. Basically, the Breathwalk technique consists of coordinating breathing with the movement of walking. But there's more to it than that and each part of the technique is presented in a different chapter, with no clear explanation of how to put it all together.
For example, there are different Breathwalk patterns to use, depending on what effect you would like to see in your body and mood. These have names like Eagle and Tiger and are basically different ratios of inhalation to exhalation, which are documented with nice graphs. Then there are awakener exercises, sort of like warmups, which are done before the walk. These too are chosen based on the effect you are looking for. Each walk ends with an integration, or innerwalk, step and here again there are different types to choose from. Then there are optional primal sound scales that you can add once you're comfortable with the basics.
After getting through all this information I was overwhelmed and would have liked to see a chapter that presented the complete walks with all their components all in one place. There is a Program Guide at the end of the book but this just adds to the confusion. It lists the individual programs based on the effect achieved, such as "Rejuvenate your energy reserves" or to go from "Simple anxiety to inner calm". But to get the details of each program you need to jump around to several chapters. Many of the programs use more than one breathing pattern, and to find those patterns you go to one chapter; for the awakener exercises, you go to another chapter; and for the innerwalk yet another chapter.
If you want to find a basic breathwalk and get outside for a sample walk in short order, then I must say good luck. But if you're willing to hang in there, read the entire book, and figure out where all the pieces of the technique are explained, then I think you'll find that the book does ultimately deliver and Breathwalk does work. If only it had a more user-friendly structure this would be a five-star book.

A life changing walk

I bought the book because it incorporated elements from two of my favorite exercises, yoga and walking. After reading the book front to back, I took a walk. I was amazed. It opens your senses, quiets your mind and changes your mood in a quick 15-30 minutes. It's something you can do anywhere(your neighborhood, parks, malls, airports, work and even on a treadmill), no special clothes or equipment required, and it's soooo easy! Read the book, get your friends to get one and read it too, then go for a walk together.

Great results immediately, but a lifetime to enhance them

What a terrific book! Despite the fact that it's an exercise book, it is extremely engaging, and the concepts easy to follow. The challenge is to have the patience to read the book through completely so that you understand fully what Breathwalk is all about, before trying it out haphazardly.
One reviewer felt the book was disorganized, and there should have been a brief overview chapter so the reader could quickly dive into Breathwalking.
My good judgment tells me that the presentation of the material was quite deliberately thought through so that the reader would have a firm foundation of what to do before striking out. A Breathwalk - though its basic components are as simple as breathing and walking - requires a certain level of precision and, as importantly, consciousness of what you're doing at any given moment, so just getting a vague idea of it wouldn't be useful at all.
I see a close similarity, in that respect, to yoga. Carefully learn and consciously practice a few yoga basics and you'll immediately feel some rewards (just like learning one Breathwalk program). But you can very satisfactorily spend a whole lifetime enhancing your practice of yoga (or Breathwalk) and, in turn, continuously reap more and more benefits.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an exercise program that addresses physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health, is easy to do but provides you with lots of opportunity for real mastery.

The End of The Risk Free Rate discusses how to look at the investing world in a different way. The "risk free rate" is a feature of a fiat currency system where a reference or benchmark is used to value financial assets.

The 2008 financial crisis and subsequent European sovereign crisis of 2010-2012 has shown what was once assumed to be a stable investment like a T-bill or government bond has become a volatile instrument with credit characteristics. This may have changed the way risk premiums should be evaluated.

When looking at the risk free rate, it has components that were not thought of prior to the 2008 crisis. Restructuring, social-political developments, private sector involvement, financial repression, and interest rate volatility are elements of a "new risk free rate". Investors should be aware of these elements when evaluating corporate, municipal, mortgage backed, high yield bonds as well as equities. The risk premium earned is perhaps at a different level and this book shows with practical examples a quantification.

Another implication is there are no "alternative" risk free rates. Often said that as government bonds are less appealing due to low returns, there are alternatives like corporate bonds or emerging market sovereign debt perceived to be "safer". This book demonstrates with extensive analysis that is not the case and how investors should use this information when judging investments.

The End of the Risk Free Rate does not mean the end of investing in bonds. The book makes neither the case that bonds are no longer suitable investments. Our financial system is built upon two premises. It is a fiat currency system that is comprised of free floating currencies backed by a paper standard, the reserve currency. The dominant factor is the US dollar at which many currencies are valued against. The other feature is financial assets valued of a benchmark, a reference rate dubbed as the "risk free rate". Whether one looks at finance such as the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) or at investment grade securities, in general a "risk free rate" is an important assumption. The financial crisis of 2008 may have changed the way the global financial system operated. For one, the direct influence on asset prices by global central banks has been unprecedented. Another reason is that it has long been assumed there was a "risk-free instrument", like a Treasury bill or a government bond. They were viewed as boring instruments with a low return because they are public goods. The onset of the financial crisis saw large guarantees by governments of their financial systems, and as economies fell into a deep recession, automatic stabilizers as well as additional fiscal stimulus increased governments' total debt. What was normally considered as a steady, boring investment became a volatile instrument with credit risk characteristics.

A Important Book about Risk and the Markets

Global financial markets experienced extraordinary turbulence from 2008 until just recently. It is all too tempting to forget the lessons of those years, particularly in Europe. As Spanish government bonds yields fall and London property prices rise, let’s not forget how close we were to the financial precipice. One lesson, to me and to the author, is that we now have to question the safety of even the perceived-to-be safest government debt obligations. We have to ask “What is the capacity of my government to keep issuing new bonds at manageable cost ?” With the perspective of a large and important investor during this period, Emons explains not only how markets functioned (or didn’t) through the crisis but also how governments and central banks were forced to respond with short-term solutions to restore liquidity and confidence, and quickly. He draws on a wealth of information and demonstrates a deep understanding of economics and market mechanisms. As opposed to many other books written about the last 5-6 years in the financial world, Emons doesn’t dwell on personalities or harsh criticisms; rather, he provides a highly objective overview of the subject matter. I particularly liked Chapter 5, entitled “Where and What to Invest In: The ‘Alternatives.’” His explanation of covered bonds should be required reading for those looking for more options in the high grade bond universe. This book probably appeals best to those with some understanding of international bond markets and/or economics but I found it highly accessible nonetheless.

Ben Emons is an articulate, well-informed market practitioner that understands not only the drivers of today’s markets but also where opportunities exist for investors. This work is an important read for any investor, whether that person is a do-it-yourself individual or a highly sophisticated institutional manager.

In The End of the Risk Free Rate, Emons expands on his previous work by doing a deep dive into concerns and opportunities faced by investors in today’s post-financial crisis environment. In the first half of this book, Emons covers one of the most concerning market developments, which is the end of the risk free rate. Other issues Emons covers are the breakdown of the relationship between inflation and employment, the possible drivers of future lackluster US economic growth, and the risk of future sovereign defaults.

In the second half of this book, Emons answers the questions: what does this all mean for investors and what should we do about it? He begins by reviewing some more academic concerns, such as the market’s implied forward expectations for front-end rates. He then moves on to a more practitioner-focused review of alternative asset classes, and the risks and opportunities they pose to investors.

I found this book to be an informative well-written review of relevant issues facing investors. I highly recommend this book.

It offers a unique perspective of one of the most famous battleships to ever serve the US Navy. From her prewar ‘show the flag’ cruises, to her Pearl Harbor sortie, and her resurrection and triumphant return to the fleet. Served in both the Atlantic and the Pacific Theaters during WWII she acquired a reputation for extremely accurate gunnery that was next to none. She was also known as a ship that would not hesitate to sail at full speed into harms way to support the troops on the beach. After WWII when the clock ran out for Nevada, she was designated as target ship. As such, she was twice atomic bombed and then withstood the sustained gunfire from another battleship, three cruisers, and eleven destroyers, but she defiantly refused to sink. Nevada finally succumbed to two torpedoes. A complete chronology of Battleship Nevada is also included. As is a look at various models and memorabilia of the ship over the years. This book is for both those would just wish to learn more about this great ship, as well as the dedicated naval historian Also included are sections on the State of Nevada which is celebrating it’s 150th anniversary in 2014 .

Amateur Effort by a Good Naval Artist

An OK overview of the USS Nevada's career lacking written information. Author is a proud Nevada based artist with many of his pictures in the book, but they are reproduced in a format way too small to be of any value. Many external pictures of Nevada, but all have been previously published. Author only gives brief descriptions of ship's history with absolutely no depth. Almost no technical data. Insignificant info on salvage effort. Poor ships history of WW II. Lots of very small pictures but none are new (previously unpublished) info other than an interesting section on Nevada hobby models. Much less data than the typical Vanguard series book at twice the price. An OK amateur effort but all in all not worth the price. I was looking for something similar to Stillwell's "Battleship Arizona" and was very disappointed.

It is about time someone recognized this incredible ship and its crew. If you asked everyone in the U.S. to name the only battleship at Pearl Harbor to get underway, the ship that shot down 25% of the attacking japanese planes on 12/7/41 (and lost 60 men), the ship that received 7 Battle Stars in WWII, the ship that was the flagship for the Normandy Invasion, served at Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal, served in WWI, was nuked twice yet still didn't sink, was the only ship whose hull number is also its namesake's states number of the 50 in the Union (36)...what would they say? Probably not the Nevada.

I salute all those who served aboard the USS Nevada, (BB-36), and the many who were lost. I commend Mr. Wayne Scarpaci for writing this book, and his amazing art contributions in this book as well. Well done, Sir.

Seriously, this book sucks. It still only has the even answers! And most of the solutions aren't explanations at all. This book assumes that you already know A LOT.

Far more often than not, I look at the back of the textbook and look at the answer, but I may not know how they came by said answer. So I head to the solutions manual for answers, only to see the exact same answer and read a short statement like "denominator has been simplified". Umm...what does that mean?? I need to know how the problem was SOLVED. A better answer would be something like "Use difference quotient to solve, then simplify answer by factoring numerator and denominator to remove radicals". That tells me a good place to start and how to simplify to obtain a final result. As it is, this book is almost totally useless to me. It's very rare that it's actually helpful.

If you are like me, just checking the answer in tha back of the book does not really help if your answer does not match the book. This solutions manual has the odd numbered problems completely worked out. It made studying so much easier by showing me where I went off track. A must have if you are buying the text!

I was required to take Calculus and was dreading the class due to my weak math background. If it wasn't for this book, I wouldn't have been able to figure out most of the problems. It helped me tremendously and it helped me get an A in Calc. MUST BUY!

I may continue this review in time but, for now, an excellent (first purchase) book on Kirkeby. The intro is written by Achim Berchardt-Hume, (former curator at Tate Modern & chief curator at Whitechapel Gallery - at publishing in 2009). Wordy but enjoyable read on Kirk's early career, experience and influence as geologist, philosophical views, themes, 'intuition/sensation over knowledge/rational', and so on. Mainly painting, some sculpture is included, but not much discussion on his 'films'.

Of MOST interest: A small selection of Kirkeby's own writings are included on: his early career, Gauguin, Rodin, and "NeoGothic Space". Evidently he's long been a prolific writer/thinker (on painting/art/existence) which is something often as valuable as the art itself (b/c you have it from the horse's mouth). Illuminating, all.
