Not The Best Text Book

Bought this book for a class. If I was an instructor this would not be my first choice for a textbook. It's too compact and this makes it boring. The information is not illustrated frequently enough and because there are no solutions to the end of chapter problems, students are not able to progress independently.

Yes, I love a textbook

I find it funny that I am giving an "I love it" rating to a textbook, but this is a good one. The authors have organised the book in a logical order presenting information and concepts so that concepts likely to be unfamiliar to the reader are not introduced till all supporting concepts are taught. There are helpful charts throughout the book where appropriate. I also found the questions at the end of each chapter to be beneficial for encouraging learning. This book focuses specifically on government accounting as the title indicates, however it points out the differences and similarities to private sector accounting where they exist and in a manner which acts to clear up any confusion before it sets in. Language is easy to read and easy to understand and all industry specific terminology is defined when used. Introductory, but in-depth text.

Top 3 Books of All Time

This is a book that I will keep on my bookshelf for many years and consistently go back to for advice and guidance. This book will be helpful for generations to come. I can literally see a kid picking up this book in 2070 and being inspired to change the world with it. I like the review on the back where it says, "For those who use this information, it will be a life changer." I completely agree. You have to not just read the book, but read and re-read it, underline the tips and quotes. And then apply it into your own life. Grant gives SO many PRACTICAL tips on how to get what you want out of life. This book made it instantly into my top 10 books of all time. Probably top 3 actually. I went and bought Grant's other books immediately after reading this. Grant is super positive and motivational. After reading this book you'll want to crush it everywhere in life. You will finally be given PERMISSION to go after your goals with an obsessed/relentless attitude. This book had motivated me and inspired me to really go towards my goal with full force and positivity. I also purchased Grant's 100 Ways to Stay Motivated Course after reading this. Grant is simply obsessed with making the world a better place in a good way. He is a role model and mentor to me even though I do know him personally. There are so many good tips in here I can't begin to explain, you MUST read the book yourself. For anyone committed to success, this is the book for you.

Just finished the book about a minute ago. Speechless, BUY THE BOOK NOW!! Don't forget to apply it. And after this buy all his literature because its priceless, in my opinion hes the young and improved version of Dan Pena. And if you know Dan Pena, God Dam! I just purchased another copy for my siblings, if you're into direct, straight forward, tell it how it is, truth and leadership. You'll love all of Grants work. If you're a little Bitch, stay away!!! but if you know anyone opposite of you, recommend them this book.

I Am Obsessed.

Grant Cardone changed my life. Back in 2015, I was stuck at a dead-end 9-5 job. After listening to his guest appearance on the Bigger Pockets podcast, I immediately searched and found his podcasts and YouTube channel, which I binged out on for the next 6 months or so. Since then, I've turned my life around, quit my job, started up my own businesses and am on my way to true success. I now have Time Freedom, Location Freedom, and am well on my way to Financial Freedom. If I did not hear Grant's voice back in 2015, I would have never been where I am today. This book is the icing on the cake to The 10X Rule. A must read for everyone interested in becoming successful in life, and sustaining it.

Bring The Music

McGee delivers a haunting personal chronicle of an incredible career in which he connected with music in the forefront at a momentous time, through the 80s and 90s and rushing towards the turn of the millennium.

Later it becomes clear that he has not rested on his laurels, his passion persists, despite the blistering pace of work and play he and his many friends and collaborators endured and nurtured for 30 years.

I really enjoy his matter-of-fact humility and straight-ahead knowledge, the nuances of his language and personality that come through in this book.

It's fascinating to read about the deals taking place, artists he represented and encouraged, brought into the spotlights, and the gradual but powerful way he learned how to do business with the major industry players.

By nature it might seem episodic, but there is an arc of history there that he's too self-effacing to harp on, he just offers it up in such a way that once concluded you feel as though you spent a long weekend at his remote country house enjoying drinks while he tells these unique tales. A true artist of passion and intellect.

This book will inspire you to reach out and bring more music into your life.

Drug-fueled tales of Primal Scream, Oasis, music industry & more

Perhaps you need not to have been a devotee of the author's famous Creation Records label to appreciate this books, but I think it's safe to say that your enjoyment of this tome would benefit from having heard and enjoyed some of the bands that Alan McGee signed and managed, acts such as Primal Scream, Oasis, My Bloody Valentine, the Jesus and Mary Chain, and the Libertines.

Creation Records was indeed an influential and exciting label and in addition to some of the well-known acts, the label released great records by terrific lesser-known bands too, including Biff Bang Pow, a band that McGee himself was a member of. This book is more than a tell-all tale of the bands that McGee signed or hung out with, but it also delves into his own turbulent journey in life, one that was dominated for many years by excessive drug use. McGee pulls no punches when it comes to those decadent days, but I found the endless drug-fueled tales a bit tedious after a few chapters. Okay, you were a mess; we get it. Much more interesting to me was reading about dealing with, and recording with, bands such as House of Love, Ride, and the prolific, underrated genius Ed Ball.

While some passages of the book are entertaining, informative, or just plain funny, other parts meander and drift, or are just confusingly presented. McGee is a colorful character with plenty of wild tales to tell, but he's not much of a writer and the book suffers from weak prose, lack of continuity, and his use of too much Scottish slang. There were times I would stop in the middle of a paragraph, wondering what --- or who --- he was rambling on about. Where were the editors? On one hand, you could call McGee's writing style refreshing and true to his maverick spirit, but on the other hand reading such gibberish can be maddening for the reader.

All in all, though, this was a fun read, and a book that will be of interest to anyone who was immersed in the "indie" music scene of the 1980s and 1990s.

The Bloom is Off the Prose

Those of us who have bathed in the dazzling light of Bloom's exegeses of the Shakespeare plays will find on display in this volume a more obscure side of the great critic. The reader encounters here an earlier edition of Bloom, one who now expresses himself in sometimes tortuous prose and unwieldy language, now bludgeons rather than dissects. This Bloom has not yet gained his sure footing in the sparse, pithy prose of his more recent works which reveal him to be a master interpreter. Still, there is much here to admire; for Bloom shows us Steven's pedigree with marvelous clarity. Beginning with Emerson and proceeding to Whitman, Dickinson, Harte and others, Bloom illuminates Steven's debt to the rich provender on which he drew. (My own acquaintance with Emerson had languished since high school , but I soon found myself reading Emerson's superb essay on Shakespeare and Whitman's Leaves of Grass with a new eye.) Bloom shows how 'the American religion', an atheistic blending of respect for individual rights, power, will, and fate found their firm expression in Emerson and travelled onward to inform the poetry which followed, especially Stevens'. Bloom shows us how the tropes of fate, death, mother, and the sea wind through the years as each poet in turn struggles to express a uniquely American sense of meaning. True enough, Bloom fiddles too much with the technical bits, but he gives us a place from which to view Stevens' work so that we can now grasp why, as Bloom says, he was the greatest American poet of the 20th century- and perhaps of any century. Such favorites as The Auroras of Autumn, The Man with the Blue Guitar, The Emperor of Ice Cream and a score of others shine for us in a new light. Best of all, the reader carries with him the secret knowledge that despite these early slips,Bloom's brilliance will only grow.

The agony and ecstasy of reading.

I check 3 stars because, forced to check something, there's no 2.5, and thought I should tilt upward, considering what poet we're talking about. Very learned book on Stevens, too learned I think, anyway so much so a layman like me should probably keep his mouth shut, but the pleasure and melancholy in reading Stevens' poems, how obsessed one can get reading them, the daunting level from which he speaks, his language and measure like a god's, and the difficulty is rewarded many times over, for one learns a little more, feels a little more, inches up to each poem a little more, at each rereading, which explains at least in part why we're expending the energy in writing and reading books about them, for his poems, especially in this case Sunday Morning, are the products of a truly great, epochal poet, that belongs in the canon more assuredly than most.

But Mr. Bloom, you speak as though you're having late coffee and oranges in a sunny chair, while I in darkness cry out, please help me, how can I keep reading your book when I read something like this on the very poem in question: "... I think it not accidental that Sunday Morning, with all its Wordsworthian, Keatsian, and even repressedly Whitmanian touches, should be Stevens' most Tennysonian poem..." You think it not "accidental"? Help! I think I'm drowning! Anxiety of influence? My God, someone throw me a life line! Do I have expend 2 lifetimes devoted to careful study on all these other poets before I can even make a hairline crack in the seal that holds back Stevens? Perhaps I do. Farewell then, I'm going under, there's nothing more for me here in this life, someone notify my children, for I thought I could read Stevens, but now I wonder if I can even walk down the street!

Bloom shows Stevens a fit member of the post-Whitman/Emerson tradition

Harold Bloom is probably my favorite critic, and Stevens one of the only 20th century poets in English I can bear to read without becoming hopelessly bored by the belatedness of the work. Bloom's book here is a close reading of the standard shorter and longer works of Stevens, and in so doing, Bloom shows how Steven's language and metaphor place him in the line of such Romantic poets as Keats, SHelly, and then of course, and most importantly, Whitman and Emerson. Emerson of course wrote rather weak poetry but his conception of the poet and his call for an American bard remain so strong today that very few poets/writers have the cognitive strength to deal with him. Most American writers fall back into the trope of nostalgia and flight (courtesy of Brockdon Brown); Stevens wrestled with this too, but his work ultimately stands in the orphic tradition of American poetry founded by Emerson, and whose strongest exemplars are of course Whitman and probably the Pan-American Pablo Neruda.

My only criticism of this book is that a) it does not address the great late poem "Sail of Ulysses," which is one of the most Emersonian poems in Steven's canon; further, b), Bloom's tone in this book, as compared with most of his others about the Romantic tradition, is not quite so strident. Some don't like Bloom at when he is strident, but I love his work the more he sounds like a high-toned Christian preacher in his Emersonian pulpit. However, it may be that Bloom is unable to rise to such heights in this book because, as great as Stevens is, he never truly defeated his agon with Emerson and Whitman; he never truly overcame his belatedness. Stevens came very near to doing so in his best work, but I am sorry to say that I think Stevens remains an ephebe to Emerson and Whitman. That is not to reduce his achievement; very few poets are able to defeat their precursors. Stevens is a canonical poet without a doubt; however, when I then open Whitman or Neruda, I see that his voice is indeed quite a bit weaker than theirs. The little old lady from Des Moines will then say, "yes sir of course, but whose voices could ever be as strong as theirs?!" And I would say to her then hallelujah madame!

Concept Mapping in Mathematics: Research into Practice is the first comprehensive book on concept mapping in mathematics. It provides the reader with an understanding of how the meta-cognitive tool, namely, hierarchical concept maps, and the process of concept mapping can be used innovatively and strategically to improve planning, teaching, learning, and assessment at different educational levels. This collection of research articles examines the usefulness of concept maps in the educational setting, with applications and examples ranging from primary grade classrooms through secondary mathematics to pre-service teacher education, undergraduate mathematics and post-graduate mathematics education. A second meta-cognitive tool, called vee diagrams, is also critically examined by two authors, particularly its value in improving mathematical problem solving.

The theoretical underpinnings of concept mapping and of the studies in the book include Ausubel’s cognitive theory of meaningful learning, constructivist and Vygotskian psychology to name a few. There is evidence which suggests that students’ mathematical literacy and problem solving skills can be enhanced through students collaborating and interacting as they work, discuss and communicate mathematically. This book proposes the meta-cognitive strategy of concept mapping as one viable means of promoting, communicating and explicating students’ mathematical thinking and reasoning publicly in a social setting as they engage in mathematical dialogues and discussions.

A brilliant introduction to, and overview of, a (meta-)cognitive technique that enables one to personalise and consolidate ones understanding of any mathematical topic or process, as well as devise ways of successfully and interestingly passing on this knowledge. The book covers the mathematics curriculum from primary to tertiary and includes a concise historical introduction to 'concept mapping'. I challenge anyone to read this book, construct your own concept map of any mathematical (or indeed any) concept that takes your fancy, and not be amazed. You will discover knowledge that you didn't even know you knew, and realise that what you did know might not have been as precise or thorough-going as you first thought!

Picking up a Sara King book will lead to a love/hate relationship. She’ll draw you in and leave you wanting more. You’ll spend your time applauding her genius and cursing her name while you beg for the next fix. You’ll end up facebook stalking her and checking amazon to see if the next book has popped up. Heaven help you when it does. You already know you’ll spend the rest of your day lost in her world barely coming up for air and only stopping to sleep when your pass out. I picked up my first Sara King book on a whim back in 2012. After the third one I stopped reading what they were about. I can’t say her books are for every one but for me I’ve yet to read one I didn’t like. Take a chance. You might become her next minion.

Great novella for the Zero Series and if you haven't read the series - get on it and you won't be disappointed!

I loved the book. If you have not read the others in the series, it won't be as enjoyable. The series though is one of the best science fiction around right now. The Zero series is completely unexpected in the genre. You read about humans interacting with alien species and the aliens are always typically coming off as all bad. This book has the characters fully fleshed out so you really are going crazy when there is not another book on the horizon. All science fiction readers understand this feeling completely.
I have to admit, I am usually not crazy about female science fiction writers, but this one blew me away. I will start looking into more female writers after this.
The author's ability to paint a scene with minimal words is what I look for in a good book. I want a book that is running like a television show in my head and this one delivers.
The characters are bad ass too.

This is a really great addition to the "Zero" universe, giving us a glimpse of what the major characters are up to prior to Zero Returns. It stars the Baga Flea and follows the format of a choose your own adventure novel, which is actually tied in with the plot. Flea is a hilarious character with his defiant attitude, comical inability to grasp numbers, and childlike demeanor which makes this a fun read. Can't wait for more.

A man who has done everything on Broadway, Ostrow began as a prot?g? of composer-lyricist Frank Loesser, going on to direct (Meredith Willson's 1963 Here's Love), write (Stages, 1978) and, mostly, produce: 1776 (1969), Pippin (1972), M. Butterfly (1988). As other outlets for his energy, he also joined the University of Houston faculty and established the Musical Theatre Lab as "a safe place in which to experiment." The Lab brought professionals and students together for 27 productions, including Really Rosie by Maurice Sendak and Carole King. Here, Ostrow offers a celebration of the Broadway musical and "a meditation on what caused its decline," looking back over half a century of Broadway's best from 1950's Guys and Dolls all the way to Rent. Ostrow, has a penchant for brisk, tart sentences and pulls no punches, admitting that producing has entailed "a few bargains with the Angel of Death." In two startling pages, he explains how Scratch (1971), his effort to bring together "two American poets dramatizing folklore with song," collapsed: "It was a risky idea from the start, but when Bob Dylan betrayed us, 79-year-old Archibald MacLeish was devastated." He also divulges his role in the origins of Bob Fosse's 1979 movie All That Jazz. The project began as a collaboration, a "string quartet" about four characters. But when Ostrow fled the superficiality of Hollywood, Fosse turned it into a symphonic "extravaganza." Ostrow takes such delight in quoting his favorite lyrics that the small-type copyright list fills eight pages. Readers with their own Broadway recollections may wish a CD had been packaged along with this trove of tunes, dances and reminiscences. (July)

A poor publication of a brilliant work

As an owner of this book and an actual student of Ostrow at the University of Houston, I have a particular insite to this piece. We covered the material in class and somehow the energy, excitement, and passion we got as students is missing in the printing. Ostrow is one of the great "thinkers and doers" of the theatrical world. Unfortunately, the book doesn't do justice to the passion Ostrow has for the art form. What this should have been was two books--a formal critical analysis of the genre and its history with a separate biography of his involvement and life story. Those are two books I would buy, read, re-read, and cherish. Is this one worthwhile? Yes. Better yet--beg, borrow, or steal to get to Houston to take his classes. Anyone serious about the future of theatre should be begging to be here.

Dull, Duller and Dullest

This book is not very enlightening. Most of it is filled with familar lyrics. I thought it was going to be a Broadway Producer's Journey. No such luck. It is filled with traditional Broadway folklore. This book is filled with stories everyone has heard many times over. A major disappointment.
