Save some money, buy previous editions!

I compared page for page 2006 and 2004 editions of Kaplan Medical USMLE Step 1 Qbook and was really surprised: Kaplan didn't change a single word in QBook over past 4 years. Well, I have to be completely honest: they changed 2004 for 2006 in most instances. I owned both and regret I bought latest edition myself. There were only few minute changes since 2002 and none of them affected answers (few question stems were re-written in 2004). So, if you're really want to waste your money, buy latest edition of Kaplan books.

This book was written by greats of like Dr Lionel Raymond,Ruebush,Daugherty,Dunn,Lewis who moved on & joined Becker .Its sad that kaplan didn`t bother to update content.Kaplan keep changing cover for quick cash every Yr but Concerning authorities never bothered to pay attention to comments on Amazon/Google that are begging for upgrade in Step 1 & CK alike.Officially Immunology is separate block and scored individually for 4 Yrs now but kapaln didn`t bother to write or just sort out separate q for it from qbank.

Pretty good source of practice questions

It's a Qbook. It has questions and answers. If you need study tips or strategies, try websites, blogs, your school advisors. If you want practice questions, this is a good resource.

This will definitely not replace using an online QBank, but it has USMLE-style questions with decent explanations, in a portable format so that you can study even when you can't be on your computer. I actually keep it on my nightstand and do some questions every night in bed (nothing like board studying to make you sleepy). It is a better Qbook than the First Aid Qbook, which has many errors and sometimes weak explanations. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with it.

This book is perfect for any YA reader, boy or girl. The story has plot twist and plenty of suspense that will keep you on edge until the very end. It deals with the idea of predetermined destiny and to be careful of who you trust. EVERY teen should read this book, especially maze runner fans!

I Am Not A Serial Killer by Dan Wells

Why on Earth did I wait so long to read the John Cleaver series?
That is the question I have to ask myself after finishing Dan Wells's I Am Not a Serial Killer.

When it comes to beautiful prose and expert story telling, Wells can check both items off the list. This book terrifies in the all of the best ways. John Cleaver, a young man with a problem--no conscience to be exact--struggles internally with his sociopathic tendencies. This character has no moral compass. But he does have a desire to do, as he perceives it, what others think of as "right." He sets a stringent set of rules to help him from drifting into the darkness of anti-social behavior. He lives right on the edge of caving into a base desire to kill.

Interestingly, I found John Cleaver's rules and internal struggle quite inspiring. Most of us set rules in our minds, some of them difficult to follow, to keep us from doing things that will harm ourselves and others. The fact that I found some inspiration in this character is a testament of Dan Wells's research of the human psyche.

But don't forget. This novel is a psychological thriller with plenty of chills and suspense. Do not miss this novel. My copy of Mr. Monster, the second book in the series arrived just yesterday. I can't wait to go back to the world of John Cleaver.

Incredibly Valuable at Any Price

I bought this book long ago, at a used book store, but never had the nerve to use it until a few months ago. I'm now in the middle of the eighteenth project in the book (there are 22 projects.) I've learned so much from this book and recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to paint in oils. I made a major mistake by not following one of Mr. Stern's instructions exactly and it caused me tremendous grief. I hope to spare you the frustration I experienced by not doing as he said.

The book tells you to line the walls and floor of the setup box with "inexpensive assorted colored papers - the kind children use in school." I ignored this and (clever me!) decided to buy a variety of large, much more colorful sheets from a rack at Hobby Lobby. As a consequence, I would spend up to 20 minutes trying to match the color of a sheet of paper, and never succeed. I would simply give up and use the paint that was the closest match that I could produce. I realized just the other day why I could never match the paper's color. I was using the less expensive, student-grade paints recommended in the book. Since this kind of paint lacks the rich, intense pigment load of artist-grade paint, I could NEVER produce the bright, intense colors of the papers I bought. So do exactly what the author says to do: buy a pad of children's construction paper. The relatively dull, muted colors can be easily duplicated with student-grade paint.

Here's one other tip. The author tells you to make a "spot screen", which is a small rectangular piece of gray cardboard with a hole punched in it. You look at your subject through the hole to isolate an individual color. (It's funny that he refers to it as "gray"; elsewhere in the book he lists words like "gray", "brown" and "black" as taboo.) In any event, make sure the gray is a perfectly neutral gray, exactly midway between white and black and without any noticeable color tint. If the gray of your spot screen is too light, and you'll see and paint colors darker than they really are; if it's too dark, you'll see and paint colors lighter than they really are. And if the gray leans slightly towards some color, what you see through the hole will lean toward that color's complement; e.g., if your card's gray is slightly red, what you see through the hole will be slightly green.

To sum up, this book is a treasure trove of information, and if you faithfully do each project you'll be amazed at how much you learn, and how much your confidence grows.

Simply the best

Of the many books in my art instruction collection, I rate this one at No. 1. It has had the greatest influence on me of any lessons or books I've had. If you treat this book as a course in painting you will: 1) learn how to mix absolutely any color with dead-on accuracy, 2) get practical advice on setting up materials and aids (for example, his "spotter" to isolate colors -- simple but indispensible), and 3) become comfortable with the painting knife, which most amateur artists shy away from. Get this book and devote a few months to it. You'll never regret it.

(Note: He shows the use of oil paints. I prefer acrylics, and used them for these lessons without any problems.)

Waste no more time with flaky, new age egopainting. This is it.

Arthur Stern, student of the legacy of that almost-lost thread that has passed through Classical art, the Renaissance masters, the Baroque masters, into Chase, Hawthorne, Henri (and his students- Bellows, Hopper, Kent, etc.), the Bay Area artists (etc.), offers up the eye-clearing humility, without BS, that is necessary to see in order to paint what Cezanne called the "ensemble".

Akin to tuning a guitar, the method reveals that the harmony of the few notes ("spots" of value/hue/chroma) must be chorded before you learn how to glue an American flag and a photocopy of the Twin Towers to your 21st Century bombast. THE FUNDAMENTAL basis for painting. A pathway, not to be viewed as a fixed style or dogmatic cul-de-sac, but a route of initiation to Beauty.

Hawthorne/Hensche purists irk me with their holier-than-thou, plein air fascism (and some of their students with how-to books should be, with Thomas Kincaid, whipped), but I DO agree that THIS IS THE DOOR TO THE WAY. Beautiful, simple truth. Reprint Stern's book before the world ends.

Very lucid

I have to admit, when I first started reading the book, I was ready to dismiss it all as nonsense...I mean really, vectors are arrows, not a stack or thumbtack or any of the other "flavors" of vectors that are introduced in the book. I kept reading, and eventually the light clicked on...maybe I'm slow. Or maybe I simply still bear the bruises from my high school physics teacher beating the whole "arrow: magnitude and direction" aspect of vectors into me.

Weinreich discusses vectors, in their many forms (contravariant, covariant, etc), almost entirely divorced from anything to do with physical laws. Relying on our natural human intuition and perception capabilities, this book explores the definition and manipulation of vectors and vector fields as simple geometric objects existing in three dimensional space where rulers are forbidden. Along the way, we learn about the simplicity, power, and if I may dare say, the beauty, of the branch of mathematics known as vector analysis.

This is a great book to accompany a course or a more traditional book on the topic (e.g. Gravitation). I found the book to be easy to read and comprehend (and I am an engineer, not a physicist or mathematician). I think some of the figures could have used a little work, seeing how the whole book is based on geometry arguments.

A great companion to math and physics

This book is deep! While lacking the formal rigor of vector analysis or exterior calculus this book attempts to remedy the lack of intuition that often accompanies such treatments (read the preface of the book).
In this book the author sneaks in clifford algebra, forms and applications to physics, he gives us a method of calculation that opens up the vector calculus you already knew and gives a great way to 'draw' many phenomenon in physics.
The author has an important agenda in this volume and that is to distinguish between objects that naturally behave differently. It has been the legacy of Gibbs and Heaviside for us to flounder in the 3-d application/misapplication of Hamiliton's quaternions. The reader is led to realize that identifying everything with contravariant vectors (arrows) is wrong and damaging to our intuition of phenomenon.
I highly recommend this book. It may seem hokey at first with odd names like thumbtack and swarm but it portrays deep mathematics in a beautiful manner. Work hard on it, apply it to physics and mathematics and be surprised at what you find! This sort of geometrical analysis is hard to find (try Gravitation by MTW or Applied Differential Geometry by Burke) at this level.
Remember it is meant to be an affordable companion to courses on vector and tensor analysis, and what a companion it is!
